cross bones special

our latest project is a cross bones which is looking like it should be a good one...... so far we have removed the original parts and that are not required and fitted a sweet RSD fender which has now gone of to the painters and have a RSD sprung saddle on order for it with a retro tail light and license plate holder.
We have some beach bars and braided hoses on the way so it should look sweeeeet!

2011 Harley-Davidson Blackline Softail

The Softail family grows a little bigger and a little badder with the introduction of the new 2011 Blackline, the latest addition to the Motor Company’s successful Dark Custom line.

“Lean as wire, hard as iron, and dark as a tar road at midnight,” is how H-D describes what is essentially just a variation of the high-end Softail series, but the Blackline has several notable features that grabbed our attention when we saw it at its New York City media reveal last week.

The Blackline brings in a new “Black Denim” powerdercoating for its frame and swingarm, laced aluminum wheels with black-anodized rims, a fresh FX front end topped with a new “Split Drag” handlebars mounted directly to a thin upper triple clamp powdercoated black.

2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline

Harley-Davidson’s new Blackline was introduced to the world’s media in the SoHo district of New York City.

Inspiration for the Blackline came from H-D Senior Industrial Designer/Stylist, Casey Ketterhagen, who emphasizes the importance of the bike’s proportions, wanting it to look like “a person just riding a motor.”

2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline

The Softail’s typical tank-top gauge panel is replaced by a gloss-black die-cast trim panel that conceals the fuel pump hardware. A new multi-function gauge is set at the base of the narrow “Split Drag” handlebar.

To that end, graphics are subtle (with no raised badges), chrome is minimal (black is the main accent), and slenderness is emphasized. A Softail’s 5-gallon fuel tank is stripped of its tank-top instrument console to lower its profile and is substituted by a small gauge atop the triple clamp. The analog speedo is augmented with a miles-to-empty LCD readout, replacing the old fuel gauge that looked like a filler cap at the top of the tank’s left side.

Although the Blackline is fundamentally a familiar Softail, the H-D boys have made changes that pushed the legal limits. It all began by pulling the rear fender down as low as possible – the first thing done to this project – which helped bring the seat height down to 26.1 inches, the lowest two-up seat offered by the Milwaukee crew. Similarly, the mirrors are pushed inboard to the DOT minimum, and the upper triple clamp was made as thin (1 inch) as they could get away with while maintaining structural integrity.

“We tried to make it look as illegal as possible,” says Ray Drea, VP and Director of H-D Styling Department.

The minimalist theme carries over to the rear of the bike. A narrow (144mm) tire, borrowed from the pre-’08 Touring platform, is a middle finger to the tired fat-tire movement. Its rear fender is nicely bobbed and further cleaned up with Harley’s combination stop/tail/turn lights. A composite license-plate holder mounts to the lower edge of the fender. The rear fender struts are left in their raw forged finish and powdercoated matte black.

The stripped-and-lean theme is continued with the wide spacing of the FX 41mm fork tubes that make the 5.75-inch headlight look tiny, and a gap between the nose of the seat and the fuel tank exposes the top of the frame, contributing to the bike’s airiness.

2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline

The Blackline’s back end is narrow and trim, aided by turn-signals that double as the brake light.

2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline

The Blackline’s V-Twin is beautifully detailed with interesting surface finishes. Note the chrome lines leading into the horseshoe oil tank.

Just like other Softails, Harley’s counterbalanced TC96B powers the Blackline through a 6-speed transmission, but it boasts a fresh two-tone look. Its lower end is powdercoated gloss black, accented with silver powdercoat on the cylinder heads with machined highlights. Chrome brightwork is provided on its derby and timing covers and its simple, round air cleaner, followed by a chrome over/under shotgun exhaust. “Just enough shine to make the black parts look blacker,” says Harley.

Not Just Glides For Geezers!

2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline

Harley’s Mike Lowney on stage at Don Hill’s pub, preaching the Dark Custom gospel to media from around the globe.

As the average age of H-D owners creeps upward, the MoCo’s Dark Custom line has been successful at reaching a younger demographic.

Michael Lowney, Director of H-D’s Market Outreach, says Harley sold more bikes to the 18-to-34 year-old segment over the past two years than the total sales of Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Triumph and Victory combined!

Harley now has the #1 market share position in all displacement classes among the 18-34 demo. Lowney says H-D’s 18-34 customers are split into thirds: first-timers, conquest sales, and repeat buyers.

For whatever reason, younger riders are attracted to the black-intensive Dark Custom line, which includes the Iron 883, Nightster, Forty-Eight, Street Bob, Fat Bob, and Crossbones. But Harley has been proffering the dark theme for decades. It may have begun back in 1981 with the Sturgis, a blacked-out FX platform, followed more recently by the Night Train, which was dropped only a couple of years ago and also sold well among young adults.

The Blackline’s riding position is aggressive, with a fists-forward reach to the narrow, internally wired handlebar. H-D’s designers first tried to fashion clip-on handlebars, but they proved to be hard to fit while maintaining adequate steering sweep, and they’d also take away customization options. Forward foot controls are polished.

The axles of the 21-inch front wheel and 16-inch rear are set 66.5 inches apart, while the rake angle is laid down to 30 degrees. As is typical of Harley’s slammed cruisers, lean angles when cornering are quite limited: just 24.4 degrees to the left and 25.9 to the right. Rear-suspension travel is a decent 3.6 inches.

Braking duties are handled by 4-piston calipers biting on 292mm rotors front and rear, which should be adequate for the Blackline’s 683-lb fully fueled weight. Anti-lock brakes are available in an optional $1195 package that includes H-D’s Smart Security System.

2011 Harley-Davidson Softail Blackline

The Blackline’s riding position has an aggressive forward lean for a cruiser. The diminutive passenger seat demands a cozy grip.

Although the Blackline began as a side project for Ketterhagen, Harley’s team of 12 designers all had their input, including the legendary Willy G Davidson. Harley’s Ray Drea describes the styling process as organic, adding the team reviews everyone’s projects each week. “We expect to have the garbage can filled with ideas,” Drea says about the synergetic progression.

The Blackline is now en route to dealers, retailing for $15,499 in its Vivid Black base version. An extra $499 buys your choice of Cool Blue Pearl or Sedona Orange.

2011 Harley-Davidson CVO Street Glide Review

The Street Glide, with its distinctive batwing fairing, is H-D’s best-selling bike. Equally impressive is the SG’s appeal across all demographics, ensuring broad-based sales success.

So, the Street Glide is obviously one of the most desirable bikes on the market, and it reaches its zenith of appeal in the 2011 CVO edition tested here.

Harley’s Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) division takes standard H-Ds and fits them with extra chrome, custom paint, loads of accessories, and special Screamin’ Eagle high-performance powerplants to create the pinnacle of Harley’s lineup. “CVO motorcycles,” says the Motor Company, “define the ultimate vision of Harley-Davidson styling, features and performance.”

The successful Street Glide again gets the CVO treatment for 2011. It’s a highly desirable light-duty touring cruiser.

The successful Street Glide again gets the CVO treatment for 2011. It’s a highly desirable light-duty touring cruiser.

There are four limited-production CVOs for the 2011 model year. At the top end of the scale is the $36,999 Road Glide Ultra we recently tested, followed by the Ultra Classic Electra Glide ($36,499). The CVO Street Glide slots in above the $29,599 Softail Convertible.

At a $32,499 MSRP, the Street Glide CVO is a business-class ticket among V-Twin baggers, but it takes just a cursory glance at the CVO-SG to recognize its premium quality – whether in terms of paint quality, depth of chrome or finish details. Expensive bits on are display everywhere you look, which helps justify the pricey initial outlay.

CVO owners aren’t afraid of being bold. The Glide’s exclusive paint scheme is offered in four color combos, each with its own specific finishes for the engine, wheels and muffler end caps.

CVO owners aren’t afraid of being bold. The Glide’s exclusive paint scheme is offered in four color combos, each with its own specific finishes for the engine, wheels and muffler end caps.

Helping distinguish the CVO from lesser Glides are new Agitator wheels in the terrific Contrast Chrome finish. The 19-incher up front is the largest-diameter wheel ever fitted to an H-D touring motorcycle, and it’s complemented by floating 300mm Agitator brake rotors and a style-matching 18-inch rear wheel. A “slammed and trimmed” front fender tightly hugs the tire’s curve.

As is typical of CVO models, the SG is slathered in deep, rich chrome. The lovely hand and foot controls are from Harley’s Rumble Collection, and the blingy brightwork is carried over to the fork sliders, dipstick and trick, push-button fuel door, among a myriad of other places.

If you’re a fan of attractive rear ends, the CVO SG will turn you on. A pair of vertical LED tail lamps are cleanly frenched in to the area between the extended saddlebags and the rear fender, providing stop lights and turn signals in one nicely integrated design under smoked lenses. The rear view is punctuated by tasteful billet end caps on the exhaust’s dual mufflers.

Six speakers and a standard iPod nano provide a premium audio experience on the road. Note also the flush-mount filler cap and LED fuel gauge atop the fuel tank.

Six speakers and a standard iPod nano provide a premium audio experience on the road. Note also the flush-mount filler cap and LED fuel gauge atop the fuel tank.

The CVO SG also gets a unique fuel tank. It began life as a 6.0-gallon cell from a Road King, but it’s been customized with a flush-mount gas filler on the right, with a matching LED fuel gauge on the left. A new low-profile console is accented with a unique “liquid metal” tank medallion.

As you’d expect from the CVO division, it lacks nothing in terms of standard accessories, which include cruise control, ABS, bag liners and H-D’s Smart Security System.

“The theme this year is big audio,” said Randy Klopfer, CVO’s team manager, at the CVO’s press launch.

And the SG backs up that statement with a 100-watt-per-channel stereo that delivers tunes to no less than six speakers. In addition to typical audio functions and XM Radio, the SG comes equipped with an 8GB iPod nano (etched with Harley’s bar-and-shield logo) that docks in a holder in the right saddlebag. Two full-range speakers and two tweeters kick sound at a rider from the color-matched fairing cockpit, while clarity and bass response is augmented by a pair of 6.5-inch speakers located in the fairing lowers.

All 2011 CVOs are set apart from regular OEM Harleys by the fitment of the Screamin’ Eagle Twin-Cam 110-cubic-inch motor. This fuel-injected engine’s extra displacement gives it a factory crankshaft rating of 115 ft. lbs. of torque at its 4000-rpm peak. That’s up significantly from the 96-cubic-incher’s claimed 92.6 ft-lbs at 3500 rpm. A high-torque starter and a stronger clutch handle the big engine’s extra demands.

Harley’s TC110 powerplant displaces 1803cc and is only available from the factory in CVO models. It boasts a 19.5% increase in peak torque over H-D’s standard TC96.

Harley’s TC110 powerplant displaces 1803cc and is only available from the factory in CVO models. It boasts a 19.5% increase in peak torque over H-D’s standard TC96.

We’ve become big fans of Harley’s Touring line since the total chassis overhaul in 2009, and the Street Glide proves to be the most manageable FL of the bunch. The low-profile 130/60-19 front tire responds with sharper reflexes than the taller rubber on other FLs, and the SG does well to hide its considerable 852-lbs fully fueled wet weight. Dual 4-piston front calipers and standard anti-lock control provides stout speed retardation.

Short riders are aided in handling that bulky mass by a new low-profile seat located just 27.4 inches off the ground, but it comes at the cost of a minute 2.0 inches of rear suspension travel. The seat itself, with simulated snakeskin inserts and matching passenger backrest, is quite comfortable, but the slammed suspension can be harsh over big bumps. The 41mm fork’s 4.6 inches of travel has an easier time sucking up large impacts. If tilting horizons is on tap, you’ll want to crank up the hydraulic rear preload to achieve Harley’s claimed 32 degrees of lean angle on the right; 30 degrees on the exhaust side.

The Street Glide is one of the most nimble V-Twin baggers around.

The Street Glide is one of the most nimble V-Twin baggers around.

The CVO SG’s cockpit is a pleasant place to watch the miles roll up in front of you. The 7-inch tinted windscreen (from the Electra Glide) provides better protection than lesser SGs while still offering a suitably sporty style. A very neutral riding position helps the rider feel fully in control and comfortable. The audio system sounds great, the cruise control holds steady speeds, and the self-canceling turnsignals perform flawlessly.

"The CVO SG’s cockpit is a pleasant place to watch the miles roll up in front of you."

We were grateful to have the TC110 motor on our ride around Lake Tahoe that took us upwards of one mile high, elevations that would have the TC96 gasping for air. Throttle response is exemplary, and vibration from the big-cube motor is isolated from the rider at all cruising speeds, aided by the overdrive gear in the 6-speed transmission.

The Street Glide is one of our favorite Harleys, and this CVO version ratchets up the performance, finish quality and luxury items to give it even greater appeal. As a light-duty touring rig, it’s nearly perfect, spoiled only by minimal rear suspension and a fairly limited stowage capacity.

Stylin’ while Glidin’.

Stylin’ while Glidin’.

A regular OEM Street Glide retails for nearly $18,000 with color options, which sounds reasonable next to the CVO’s $32.5K MSRP. But for the “alpha riders” who Harley says are its CVO customers and for whom money doesn’t seem to be a problem, this tarted up Glide will satisfy for its luxury, amenities and exclusivity – just 3700 or so will be built.

2011 Harley Road Glide Ultra First Ride

The second new addition to the 2011 Harley family is the Road Glide Ultra. H-D has taken its popular bagger and dressed it out in full touring trim, adding vented fairing lowers and what Harley calls its PowerPak as standard equipment. The PowerPak consists of Harley’s 1690cc Twin Cam 103 engine, anti-lock brakes and the H-D Smart Security System. The extra horsepower of the TC 103 suits the Road Glide Ultra well because the new upgrades and accessories add 83 pounds in comparison to last year’s Road Glide Custom. Much of this weight comes in the form of the King Tour Pak the Road Glide Ultra is equipped with which features a big topcase with 2.26 cubic-feet of storage, a wrap-around rear tail/brake light combo, a passenger backrest and speakers for the 80-watt Harman Kardon audio system.

The PowerPak package on the Road Glide Ultra is also standard fare on the Road King Classic and the Electra Glide Ultra Limited. It is offered as an option on the Street Glide and the Road Glide Custom, but the Road King, Electra Glide Classic and Ultra Classic Electra Glide get left out of the party and are still powered by the TC 96. Harley-Davidson was mum as to whether the TC 103 will be the mill of choice for the entire touring family in the future, but after watching our group of motojournalists scramble for seat time on the bikes equipped with the 103, I’d be surprised if it isn’t at the heart of all Harley tourers next year.

The big pushrod-operated V-Twin is the star of the changes differentiating the 2011 Road Glide Ultra and the 2010 Road Glide Custom. The new mill pushes out a claimed 9.6% more torque than the TC 96, achieved in part by upping the bore from 3.75 to 3.875 inches to push max output numbers to a reported 102 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm. But you don’t have to wait until 3500 rpm to notice the difference the extra displacement brings. The Road Glide Ultra comes off the line with extra urgency and there’s plenty of pull as low as 2200 rpm. It’s not snap-your-head-back power but is an even distribution of arm-stretching, low-end torque and adds the right amount of gusto needed to spice up Harley’s touring line. The extra power also adds a richness to the exhaust note coming out of the dual exhausts as H-D switched the Road Glides and the Street Glide back to a 2-1-2 arrangement for 2011.

The clutch lever pull is light and friendly and the throw is short as open road allows us to get up to highway speeds. A push with my left thumb engages the motorcycle’s standard cruise control mounted on the left handlebar. Though I’ve ridden the Road Glide before, the new Ultra version feels slightly different. The pressure point from the new seat is higher up on the lower back as the saddle is narrower up front and has a deeper bucket. Air is diverted around the rider more, courtesy of a higher windscreen, mid-frame air deflectors and the fairing lowers. But the weight and width of the King Tour Pak has altered the bike’s center of gravity and the Road Glide Ultra doesn’t quite have the nimbleness of the Road Glide Custom.

As the mountain roads get twistier and narrower and then funnel down to one-lane bridges over fast-moving creeks, we test the edges of the 17-inch Dunlop D407 Multi-Tread front tire. The fact that the Road Glide Ultra’s Shark-Nose fairing is frame-mounted keeps action at the bars from feeling too heavy and since Harley went from stamped and welded parts to a casted and forged frame on its touring bikes a couple of years back, its big tourers track loads better in turns. You can notice a tad more drag on the Road Glide Ultra’s rear end though, a combination of the added weight and altered aerodynamics.

A quick squeeze on the front brake lever and the four-piston fixed Brembo calipers put the bite on dual rotors and the feel of Harley’s brakes continues to improve yearly. Combined with the ABS that comes as part of the PowerPak, the braking system is much more confidence-inspiring than years past. Harley’s done a solid job of keeping its ABS unobtrusive by hiding the components in the wheel hub in an independently controlled setup. A good stab at the brakes is all it takes to get the ABS to engage and the corresponding foot or hand will experience a pulse letting riders know the system is pumping the brakes faster than humanly possible.

The final part of the PowerPak is the H-D Smart Security System, a cool little hands-free fob that communicates with the security module on the bike, automatically self-arming and disarming when you’re within a certain range. When riders turn the bike off and walk away with the fob, the Smart Security System disables the vehicle starter, ignition and electronic fuel injection. And when you’re plunking down $22,499 for the Road Glide Ultra, riders will appreciate this safeguard to their investment. When you consider that you’re getting a bigger engine, ABS, and a sophisticated security system for $1995, the price of the PowerPak, it’s a deal.

And passengers will be much happier perched in their own backrest with its adjustable lumbar support, their feet propped up on their own floorboards. There are loads more storage for two-up travels, because the 2.26 cubic-feet of the GTX Saddlebags is doubled by the 2.26 cubic-feet of storage capacity offered up by the topcase. The PowerPak even boosts the sound of your tunes with two more speakers so riders can plug in their favorite MP3 player and crank up the 80-watt Harman/Kardan system.

The one point of contention with the 2011 Road Glide Ultra sure to cause a stir is that the new touring accessories detract from the aggressive, hot rod styling of the old Road Glide. The fairing lowers and King Tour Pak makes the Road Glide Ultra a better mount for long trips but at the cost of character. Any time you mess with the status quo, there’s going to be dissension in the ranks. But one ride with the extra power of the TC 103 on a bike with better brakes and double the storage should be all it takes to expose the merits of Harley’s newest touring motorcycle. The complete 2011 touring lineup consists of the Road King ($16,999), Electra Glide Classic ($18,999) ,Ultra Classic Electra Glide ($20,999), Street Glide ($18,999 + $1995 for PowerPak), Road Glide Custom ($18,999 + $1995 PowerPak), Road King Classic ($19,499), Road Glide Ultra and the Electra Glide Ultra Limited ($23,699).

And while we got to spin some miles on the two newest 2011 Harleys, the SuperLow and Road Glide Ultra, the 2011 Softail Classic caught our eye first as one of the most striking of the new Harleys with its classic styling. Vintage full fenders draped over spoke wheels and whitewall tires held by a stocky fork have timeless appeal. Stout in the middle with a five-gallon tank and tall chrome console, low-riding on an ultra-plush 24.5-inch high leather seat holding on to low-set, wide cruising bars, the Softail Classic is all about getting to your destination in style. Big floorboards allow for plenty of leg room in a kicked-back riding position while you click through gears with the heel/toe shifter. The Softail Classic is running with the Twin Cam 96 B engine and after having ridden the TC 103-powered Road Glide Ultra prior to the Softail, the livelier throttle response is quickly missed.

As a family, the Softails grabbed the last of Harley’s major 2011 headlines with the option of coming equipped with ABS. The tidy system consists of an ECU “brain box” in the electrical caddy in front of the rear tire. This ECU monitors the rear wheel control unit mounted behind the transmission and the front wheel unit squeezed in between the frame downtubes behind the front wheel. A tone ring is embedded in the hub bearings and the speed sensor is in the axles to provide a clean look. The system senses tire skid when brakes are applied and the ECU activates whichever wheel is experiencing skid, enacting the rapid series of pulses we had already mentioned for max braking force and to prevent uncontrolled wheel lock.

The other news surrounding the Softails is the addition of a few new buttons to the hand controls. The trip switch has been moved to left hand control resulting in the readout of the odometer has been made larger with more info including a small digital display window that provides riders with gear and rpm. The hazard on/off has been moved to a single button on right hand control and Harley has used fewer and smaller wires to make swapping out handlebars easier.

Harley-Davidson heads into its 107th year of production with an ambitious lineup of 30 motorcycles and two factory trikes. It is a company that is actively seeking to solidify its position with the 18-35 year old demographic and to expand its influence in the multicultural marketplace. To reach this demographic, Harley’s initiated more out-of-the-box marketing campaigns, setting up shop at events like Bonnaroo, a four-day, multi-stage music and camping festival held on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, and the SXSW music and film festival in Austin, Texas. It’s also been trying to take advantage of product placement in movies, like the upcoming Captain America movie where the lead character, Captain America, will ride a modified WLA which is really a converted Cross Bones. The Bar & Shield has undergone its share of challenges recently and has had to trudge through the same mire as other manufacturers, but it has made the difficult decisions and if its latest financial report is any indication, it appears to be on the way to righting a listing ship.
